Program Overview

Aeroplan started as Air Canada's customer loyalty program. It began in 1984,and has since become a loyalty company that is also used by retailers such as Home Hardware, Thrifty Foods, and Esso, as well as other airlines such as Air Creebec, Canadian North, Calm Air, and First Air.

Earn Opportunities

Obviously customers can earn Aeroplan points by booking a flight on Air Canada, or another qualifying airline. New Aeroplan customers can earn points simply by signing up. By joining, booking a flight, and taking a flight, new members can earn 1,000 bonus miles. There are many other ways to earn points including purchasing insurance online, booking hotel stays online, buying gift cards from certain stores, and of course making purchases with Aeroplan American Express cards.

Redeem Opportunities

Program members always have the choice to redeem earned miles for travel. They can use their points on flights, hotels, and even car rentals. Aeroplan also offers several other options for cashing in rewards miles. Like most other frequent traveler programs, miles can be exchanged for merchandise, but with Aeroplan miles can even be redeemed for concert and event tickets like Cirque Du Soleil. Members may also cash in miles for music MP3s, or donate to charity using the miles.

Transfer Opportunities

Aeroplan does not allow transfers of earned miles to other airlines customer loyalty programs.

Conclusion

Even though Aeroplan has gone through many changes over the past years, going from strictly an airline rewards program to a more broad customer loyalty program for retailers, etc. Aeroplan continues to have over five million members in it's program.
