Southwest Airlines - Rapid Rewards
Program Overview
Rapid Rewards is the frequent flyer program for low-cost airline, Southwest. Originally founded in 1987 as Company Club, the frequent flyer program's first incarnation allowed members to earn a free flight by collecting 16 stickers on a card. After being renamed Rapid Rewards in 1996, the paper card is gone, but the 16 segments for a free flight remain standard.
Earn Opportunities
Southwest Rapid Rewards allows members to earn points by flying segments on Southwest flights, through a Rapid Rewards Visa, and through qualifying purchases at dining and retail partners, stays ant hotel partners, and rentals at partner car rental companies. Rapid Rewards is somewhat conservative in its selection of partners in that most partners are travel-related.
Redeem Opportunities
Points earned in the Rapid Rewards program can be redeemed for free flights anywhere Southwest flies, subject to blackout dates and capacity restrictions. With only 16 segments required for a free flight, it is very easy to earn rewards quickly (hence the name, Rapid Rewards!). With no charge to book an award flight, redeeming is easier than ever.
Transfer Opportunities
Rapid Rewards maintains partnerships with both Diner's Club International and American Express Membership Rewards, and 1500 points in either can be transferred into Southwest Rapid Rewards Credits.
Conclusion
Southwest Rapid Rewards is an obvious choice for anyone who travels many short hop segments within the United States. The credit system favors short hops, but makes longer hauls less rewarding, though. Currently, Southwest does not charge a fee for checked bags, so a savings of $100 or more per round trip means your dollars go further on Southwest than on other airlines, so you can earn free flights both faster and cheaper.
