Program Overview

Delta SkyMiles is Delta's frequent flyer program. Founded in 1981, it was one of the first major frequent flyer programs, and many years later, it is still one of the best.

Earn Opportunities

Skymiles allows frequent travelers to accrue mileage through each flight segment that they fly on Delta or partner airlines, through the Delta Amercian Express card usage, through purchases in their Skymiles Marketplace and through use of Delta partner hotels, rental car companies, dining partners, shopping partners and for even using your phone. Mileage is accrued for actual segment length or a minimum of 500 miles. Bonus points are given for frequent flyers who have earned medallion level points and for first/business class tickets.

Redemption Opportunities

Points earned in the Skymiles program can be redeemed for free flights for the frequent traveler or any other person (subject to seat availability and black-out dates) and for discounts off of purchased tickets (provided you own a Delta premier credit card). Free tickets can be received for as little as 25,000 points, which can easily be accrued if opening a Delta American Express card.

Transfer Opportunities

Skymiles can be transferred to other frequent flyer accounts and to other members in the Skymiles program. With the transfer option, you could use your miles to give a family member or friend enough point to reach a level to get a free ticket.

With a wealth of opportunities to earn miles on both Delta and partner airlines and with retail, dining and other offers, and cobranded credit cards, earning miles on Delta is a breeze. With plenty of ways to redeem miles for Delta and partner flights and upgrades, you can rest assured your miles won't languish unused.

Like many frequent flyer programs, Delta Skymiles has an expiration policy wherein miles expire after 2 years unless the member has a qualifying transaction. This means that if the member either earns or redeems miles by flying on Delta or a partner airline, makes a purchase with a dining or retail parnter, or buys miles, the miles won't expire. With the numerous co-branded credit cards, and partners such as iDine/RewardsNetwork, opportunities for automatic earning on a regular basis, miles expiration is usually never a problem.
